Following executive producer John Brunton's harsh words for the people of Toronto, Canadian Idol low ratings finally got the boost they needed. While CTV's summer hit show is back on the chart's top position, ratings are down by about 20% compared to last year's season. The results show suffered greatly because of CTV's decision to air it at 7.30pm, leaving room for two hours of So You Think You Can Dance.
Evidence keeps on accumulating against CTV's regular summer hit show. Numbers are, indeed, plummeting for this year's Canadian Idol, and although ratings are still within an acceptable range, they are marking the show's departure from the first position in last week's top-10 shows chart, according to BBM's measurements. Despite last weeks performance, CTV's monopoly of the TV ratings chart has also been broken. Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, which got a special mention last week as it clearly overcame CTV's Pirate Master, finally entered the chart last week.
CTV National owned last week's top-10 chart, with all positions being held by shows aired by this network. The good performance of its reality shows Canadian Idol, So You Think You Can Dance and a brand-new season of America's Got Talent helped to give CTV absolute prime-time monopoly. With its average score of about 1.5 million viewers, Canadian Idol became last week's leader. Although not in the top-10 chart, Global's broadcast of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, up against CTV's Pirate Master, managed to win its time slot. The full 10-chart follows.
The Stanley Cup Finals proved once again to be an effective way of attracting Canadian viewers to CBC National's screen. With a massive 2.5-million audience record, CBC National's airing of the final two games leads last week's top 10 chart. Coming second, behind the Stanley Cup Finals by more than 1 million viewers, is CTV's regular summer hit Canadian Idol and its auditions. So You Think You Can Dance is, as always, giving CTV good results, but their most advertised new reality show Pirate Master is still far from the top 10, barely surpassing the 850,000 viewers.
CTV leads again last week's top-10 TV ratings chart. Global National holds the first position with its airing of House, while CBC National achieved a remarkably close second place with the Stanley Cup Finals, aired Monday, Wednesday and Saturday starting at 8pm. CTV's most watched program was its evening newscast at 6, which fell bellow this week's first by almost 1.5 million viewers and got the third position. New reality show Pirate Master (CTV, Thursday 8pm) is getting good results, and On the Lot is once again, nowhere to be found in the top-10 chart.
Last week's top-10 TV ratings chart showed no surprising results and no Canadian programming, once again. According to BBM Canada, on the fourteenth position of the weekly chart, CBC managed to stand strong with the NHL Playoffs, followed by CTV's Evening News at 6, broadcast by CTV National, getting a mark close to its average. CTV held a strong victory in the top-10 chart, obtaining nine of the ten positions. Numbers were up for the week's winner C.S.I., reaching over three million viewers.
